Sleep deprivation causes problems with concentration and cognition. It makes us more irritable. And it can ultimately lead to significant health problems if it goes on for a long period of time.
Sleep aids (in particular sleeping pills) have become a very popular treatment for sleeping problems. Unforntuately they still come with certain side effects and don't really get at the true cause or causes of the sleep problem. But sometimes changing your pre-sleep habits can. Sometimes a few simple behavioral changes can make for a dramatic improvement in the quality of your sleep.
